Expressionistic View of Gasparilla

When I painted another interpretation of Tampa’s annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival, I was aware of my love for Kokoschka’s paintings in the Philips Collection in Washington, D.C.  I loved the movement he was able to incorporate by using overlaid almost frantic brushstrokes. But I also introduced that warm, liquid, gold that characterizes the light in Tampa in the late afternoon. I’ve seen it in Maine, too, but here it pairs itself with heat and humidity.
