Debussy's "Reflets dans l'Eau"

Description

30×40 in., oil on canvas

This is a visualization of Joseph Schwartz’s playing of Debussy’s “reflective” piano piece, further described in my blog post, Reflets Dans l’Eau. I really intended to start at a spring, and follow it as a creek, but it took a turn and became a river. Someday I will get back to the spring, but this has a lovely “floating” quality, which is so Debussy. When Joe Schwartz plays this piece, I see it in different ways. On one hand, it is expressionistic; on the other, it is indeed the epitome of impressionism, no matter what Debussy said. The broken color reflects the diatonic chords, and the water flows in a broad river with the reflected sailboats.
