Enjoying their wine in St. Mark’s Square, the blue-eyed and pallid northerners contrast with the dark features of the king. Since his visage reminded the artist of the pharaonic profiles he saw in so many tombs in Egypt, he surmised that this might well be the king of Egypt. The festive palette has all the aqueous golden glitter of Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic.
