In this royally paletted and peopled painting, aristocrats vie for individual attention much as nouveaux riches at an upscale mall. Jacks (valets) peer from behind columns. A visitor from Paris once remarked, “but, they are so —- empty headed!”  My love of baroque and rococo theatricality is evident in this humorous painting.
